Creative Spaces In North West Tasmania

Creative Spaces In North West Tasmania

I have been exploring the North West Coast of Tasmania and along the way have found some amazing creative resources.

I miss Poole Printmakers, the community, the tools and the creativity. As I venture through the state little spots are popping up and they seem quiet when I visited, maybe not enough people know about these amazing resources on their doorsteps.

The Hive Ulverstone

The first I discovered was the woodworking studio in The Hive in Ulverstone. The Hive is a new building with three stories of studios, exhibitions and a creative play area on the top floor where you can build and race cars.

The Woodcraft Guild

On the ground floor is the woodworking studio run by the NorthWest Woodcraft Guild, a couple of the members were in there and explained that the tools were available for members to use, they run woodworking classes and training sessions. Around the edges of the room you can see the beautiful work by current woodworking members.

New Membership

New members are welcome and they have an active NorthWest Woodcraft Guild Facebook page

Other workshops at the Hive

I attended a Journaling workshop with Kylie Dunn at the Hive and honestly, journalling and that workshop transformed my move and have ensured I have a good record of it to remember the crazy time. I, rather obnoxiously, felt that journaling was to kitsch for me and not real art, but it has been a consistent form of creativity for me. Perhaps I'll do a blog about that too! But for now, I highly recommend a journalling workshop if anyone is feeling a little stuck.

Pottery Studio in Deloraine

Deloraine Craft Fair

A couple of weeks after we arrived in Tasmania, I was devastated to discover that we arrived in time for the Deloraine Craft Fair but I didn't know about it until the weekend after it took place. Multiple people have mentioned it to me over the last few months and I am so excited that one of the biggest Australian craft fairs is on our door step.

Deloraine Creative Studios

When exploring Deloraine we found the Deloraine Creative Studios, hosting a number of artists and makers and a wonderful pottery studio.

The DCS Pottery Hub in Deloraine

"A place to share knowledge, nurture creativity and learn new skills"

This beautiful, big studio was empty when we visited. They run classes in throwing pottery on a wheel, building pottery and glazing along with a full school holiday programme. I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to getting involved in this, I loved pottery at school and was fortunate enough to be taught by the excellent potter Lucy Yeminakis - but I was only 12 but something must have stuck.

The creative studios on the North coast of Tasmania are amazing, and something I have been stumbling upon. I am excited to find more of these creative spaces and communities. When we are more settled I will certainly prioritse some new mediums or classes, either to master a new craft or just to unlock and loosen up my creative flow.
